As part of the monthly programs to celebrate San Francisco Japantown's 100th Anniversary, the topic of "New Year's Preparation" will be discussed on Sunday, December 17, featuring a very familiar face in the community.  The event will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Issei Memorial Hall of the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC), 1840 Sutter Street, San Francisco.

Akitoshi Takazawa, Kimochi Inc.'s nutrition program chef, will demonstrate how to make traditional New Year's food.  Takazawa will show you how to make ozoni (soup with mochi), nishime (simmered vegetarian plate) and osechi (traditional Japanese New Year's foods).  There will also be sekihan (sticky rice steamed with azuki beans) and yokan (sweet azuki bean jello).

Seitaro Ishii, originally from Saitama, Japan and has been known for being the Chairman of the Board at Hokubei Mainichi, will lead the presentation.  Ishii will explain what soba is, the history of it and will provide a demonstration including mizumawashi (mixing soba flour and water), nobashi, cutting, boiling and the best part, eating.  There will be an opportunity to win his home-made soba to take home with you to share with your family.  The workshop is free and open to the public.
