100TH ANNIVERSARY OF JAPANTOWN MONTHLY WORKSHOP SERIES (VARIOUS DATES)
Starting in January 2006, monthly workshops will take place to recognize a Japanese seasonal, cultural or generational topic. Speakers who are native San Franciscans, long time residents or experts knowledgeable about a particular field will be asked to make a 20-25 minute presentation on the subject matter created for that month. After each presentation, an "ochazuke" (rice with tea and pickled vegetables) lunch will be offered. The purpose for these monthly events is to learn, share and just enjoy a place to hold these lively and entertaining discussions and to also reflect on how far Japanese Americans have evolved as a community over the past 100 years. The topics are: September 17 (11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.) - Shime Saba (mackerel) Sashimi, October - Shoji Screen, November - Soba (noodles) Making, and December - New Year's Preparation. The workshops are held at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC) at 1840 Sutter Street and are free and open to the public.
100TH ANNIVERSARY OF JAPANTOWN COMMUNITY PICNIC

Kennedy Drive, Golden Gate Park): A community-wide picnic reminiscent of the large outdoor gatherings that occurred in the early and mid 1900's. These picnics were a vital part of the social fabric of the Japanese-American community and this year's event will recreate those fun-loving celebrations and provide a vehicle for individuals, families and groups to meet and get re-acquainted. There will be games for children and adults. Families will bring their own picnic lunches or order bento by calling 415-387-9698 or e-mail judy@asiantics.com. Various community organizations will be providing desserts. There will be a chicken teriyaki cooking contest (call 415-921-0146 for an application) and a committee sponsored late afternoon barbeque of hot dogs. In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Japantown, the Buchanan YMCA, formerly the Japanese YMCA, is hosting its 3rd Annual Sentimental Journey III-Dance Memories. The celebration is a reunion of members and old friends of the YMCA featuring oldies music provided by Jest Jammin', a silent auction, recording artist Sony Holland and a buffet dinner. The event celebrates the importance the Japanese YMCA has to the Japantown and San Francisco community. In 1936, the facility was rebuilt and renamed, with funds raised by the community. For the past two years the Sentimental Journey has brought families and friends together in celebration and honor of this historic and culturally impactful community center and the members and donors who have supported its growth throughout the years.
